Alex Robinson

 

Alex Robinson graduated from the University of Manchester with a first class degree in Music (MusB) and the Royal Northern College of Music with an MMus in Performance at Distinction level (Conducting).

He studied under the student conductor program at Manchester University with Mark Heron & Justin Doyle (RIAS Kammerchor) and later with Clark Rundell at the RNCM. During his studies he was Musical Director for the University Music Society's performances of Rameau's ‘Castor & Pollux' (2016), conducted Harrison Birtwistle's ‘Silbury Air' with the composer in attendance for the NewMusicNorthWest Festival in 2016 and worked with postgraduate composers in various new music projects at the RNCM and with ‘Psappha'. Alex concluded his studies in Manchester with a performance with the BBC Philharmonic and soloists on the RNCM's International Artist Diploma (IAD) Program.

Alex has been assistant conductor to Sir Mark Elder (Hallé Orchestra), Sir Andrew Davies (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic), Nicholas Collon & Juanjo Mena (BBC Philharmonic). He has also taken part in masterlasses with Sir Mark Elder, Johannes Schlaefli & James Lowe. Alex worked with leaders from the Manchester Camerata alongside the RNCM Chamber Orchestra for a performance of Beethoven's First Symphony in December 2017. He was also Assistant conductor for Heritage Opera and the BBC Philharmonic's premiere of Alan William's ‘The Arsonists'.

In 2017 he worked with composer Samson Young on his Manchester International Festival (MIF) ‘17 project ‘One of Two Stories or Both' as conductor for the 5-part radio drama which premiered live on Unity Radio 92.8fm and subsequently on BBC iPlayer.

Recently, he has worked with the Allegra Festival Orchestra, Bulgaria, the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Prague Philharmonia, CR and will be working with the London Classical Soloists in August 2021.

The Amaretti Chamber Orchestra announced Alex Robinson as their new principal conductor from the 2020 season. He has also toured extensively with the Nottingham Youth Orchestra and has worked with Stockport Symphony Orchestra, Lancashire Chamber Orchestra and Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra.

Alex works regularly with professional vocal soloists and instrumentalists as a harpsichordist and répétiteur. Alex directed the RNCM Baroque Ensemble from the Harpsichord in 2018, performed with Pavlo Besnosiuk (Academy of Ancient Music), performed as a continuo player for the RNCM's 2017 performance of Händel's ‘Theodora' and was Assistant Conductor and Répétiteur for Radius Opera's performance of Tim Benjamin's ‘The Fires of Olympus' in 2019. Also in 2019, he made his harpsichord continuo debut with the Northern Chamber Orchestra and recorded an album with Lute & Viola da Gamba.
